Jack Flanagan

 

Senior Vice President, Operations

 

Jack Flanagan joined the USO in June 2007. As Senior Vice President, Operations, he develops and directs all USO operations supporting the active duty military community worldwide, and creates and implements new and existing programs and services.

Jack founded and served as president of Poseidon Consultancy LLC in 2005. Prior to founding Poseidon, Jack was the executive vice president of Retail Operations at Giant Eagle, a $5.5 billion, 225 store, 35,000 employee top-tier regional supermarket chain. Giant Eagle was ranked 32nd on the 2006 FORBES Private 500. In 2003, Jack established the Giant Eagle Business Systems Group, and was charged with streamlining operations and maximizing efficiencies within Giant Eagle and its suppliers. Some of the GEBS team projects included improving internal collaborations among and across various business units, implementing supply chain management with product and service vendors, and implementing an initial learning line using the Toyota Production System (TPS). Jack served as Giant Eagle’s executive vice president of Retail Operations from 1994 through 2002. He was responsible for the leadership and development of store teams, and ensuring stores operated at World Class standards and delivered budgeted financial results.

From 1990 to 1994, Jack served as East Coast vice president of Distribution for Price Club, which subsequently merged with Costco Wholesale, both membership warehouse clubs. Prior to his Price Club/COSTCO experience, Jack was a U.S. Navy Supply Corps officer for 20 years. He did an initial shipboard tour as Supply Officer USS LESTER (DE-1022) homeported in Naples, Italy. Upon coming ashore, Flanagan spent 17 years in store operations and merchandising positions for the Navy Exchange system. Assignments included Key West, Newport, Hong Kong and Naples, Italy. Jack retired from the Navy in 1990 after serving as Deputy Commander, Navy Exchanges at the Navy Resale Office in Staten Island, New York.

A native of Springfield, Mass., Flanagan graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1970 and the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, in 1971.
